Soundcast: eco-friendly technology for sound, weldable high performance castings

The aim of the Soundcast project is to give small and medium die casters an innovative and environmentally friendly way to make sound and weldable high performance castings, using a low cost vacuum assisted high pressure die casting process (VPDC).

What the project works on

Soundcast combines a vacuum system on the die, a study of the parameters that cause porosity, new recycled secondary alloys, control of the melt and of the process, a lubrication method that suits welding, and a laser welding process at reduced pressure. The objectives page lists each target, and the workplan explains how the work is split into six packages.

The work is carried out by a consortium of foundries, a vacuum equipment maker, a lubricant producer and research centres, all described on the partners page. Results reach the industry through papers, trade fairs and public deliverables, collected under news and events and documents.
